Canadian electro-pop duo (and real-life married couple) New Look present their lead single Nap on the bow of their debut album...
Alter.Hip.Soul Artist: Logic
Logic is a relatively underground rapper but he’s surfacing fast with his clever wordplay and fast paced flow. He’s got that true hip hop swag...
Local Artist Check: Miracle
You Have probally heard of this young and upcoming rapper who goes by the name of "Miracle" or "Miracle the boy wonder".
No hiltop hood, but hes' also no "Fake Yank" rapper either...Miracle is just.... real.
Some Indie for ya, without the looped vocals.
This new 5 piece UK Indie Outfit are getting ready to release their ‘Hands down‘ CD single tomorrow. I'm loving these guy's positive and relaxed vibe throughout their tracks. Slick chilled instrumentation along with a catchy hook - this track will definitly be on its way to the Triple J charts.
I am definitely digging the sounds from Canadian electro-pop duo (and real-life married couple) New Look. Their self-titled debut dropped last month with the lead single being “Nap On The Bow”. It has a great laid-back vibe that compliments Sarah Ruba’s peaceful vocals perfectly.
Check out the video below and download in CDQ here.
New Post-Dub infused Alt-Electronic vibe from Hard Mix. The up-tempo beat, looped soul vocals and the Chopped and screwed bridge make this a great one for the Dancefloor, study or chill sesh. Whatever. Just Listen and let us know what you think.
One of all time favourite R&B crooners, Tyrese is finally back with a new album - Open Invitation. Production is by Brandon Alexander, R. Kelly and David Banner and features Rick Ross, R. Kelly, Candace, Jay Rock and Ludacris. The album's lead single was "Stay" and it peaked on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs at #35. "Too Easy", is the second single - out now.
I picked up a pre-realease copy, and to be honest I expected a pile of s*** - but was very pleased with the album (maybe it was the expectation bar reasoning). Either way if your a R&B fan, You should support him and buy his new album on November 1st.
Check out "Nothing On You" one of me fave from cut.
I first heard of Jacob Latimore back in 2006, when at only 10 years old he had a run with Cornerboyz, Soundz and the Underdogs production teams. He had solid material for a kid his age, "Girl Like Tish" a song about his mother and "Like I Do" - Some R&B Jams for my high school years.
He then dissapeared...not for long tho.
Now at 15, Jacob Latimore is already a big deal (Singer, Dancer and Actor), and he’s about to get even bigger with his song featuring Issa called “Like ‘Em All.” Watch how he works in this video, and you’ll understand why he’s made girls lose their minds across the US. He has been announced in the Young BET artists list.
Latimore released this track last year (2010) which originally featured Diggy Simmons. Over 4 million youtube hits later, He re-releases a radio version with a different production and rapper - fellow Young'n Issa takes the place this time. This version is much more R&B radio freindly with a nice sample to smooth it out.
Check out the track below, which also shows fellow Young BET artist, Jawan Harris.
I think like these youngns who can sing and dance (Chris Brown, Jawan harris, Jacob Latimore), coz secretly I aspired to be like them.
Jill Scott’s The Light of the Sun album was not all that great. Scott's voice is always beautiful, but most of the tracks (including this one, felt empty). Paul Wall doesn't do much for me either.
I guess what I look for (in all artists) is artistic evolution and that’s something I unfortunately failed to see this time round.
MJB is the "Queen of Hip Hop Soul", but unfortunately not too many R&B fiends have been appreciative of her most recent material. I was never really sold on this record and the video does not help at all. Her vocals are a hit tho.
I'm not normally one to post too many covers, but this one is a great exception. Colplay performed their rendition of Calvin Harris & Rihanna's "We Found Love" last week on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge. The well-structured and beautiful instrumentation will make you forget about the dirty dutch horns that are featured on the original. Hopefully they have studio recorded this and a CDQ wil be out soon. Be on the lookout, and peep the video below.
Received a little drop of goodness in my inbox today. New comer, Rimar unleashes the video for "Higher Ground". The track has that old school funk vibe, but brings a alternative freshness to it - with the synths, guitar strings and qwerky beat. Check out the whole "Higher Ground:" EP below.
Lovin' It. Mickydees.
Brian Bradley AKA Astro has hit the US show X-Factor with a Bang. HIs first live show was a big hit, following on from his auditions. Even if this kid does not win, he has a bright future, especially with LA Reid by his side. His lyricism is on par with Veteran MCs - and he is only 14 years old.....shii, when I was 14 - I was still rhyming The "cat chased the rat under the mat".
As rhianna points out in one of his auditions below, he has a J. Cole Vibe. If you havn't seen his first audition, I think you should, the kid shows some major balls interrupting the judges. Check out the youngn from Brooklyn as he brakes it down to LA Reid and Rhianna (Verse 2 more specifically).
I'm loving all the remixes/covers of the beautiful Lana Del Rey's material. They are coming in all at once, but this one stood out.
Call me bias, but just knowing Odd Future girl wonder Syd the kid is behind this remix immediately urgered me to listen a bit more attentively than others out on the web. I was right to – this is dark, floaty and hypnotic. The right amount of Odd Future underneath Lana’s orginal vocals. Check it below.
The promotional run for Wale's Ambition is in full effect. Here is the project's title track featuring Rick Ross and Meek Millz. This track is ill.
Ambition drops November 1. Download & Listen below.
The boys have Day26 (Making the band 4) have announced their return to the limelight with a new song entitled ‘Made Love Lately’. However, now that Qwanell has left the band and they have been freed from their contract at Bad Boy Records, the quartet are using other inventive methods to promote their upcoming ‘A New Day’ album, including a web series.
Its good to see that Day26 have not given up on their careers. Despite the various issues that they have encountered in the past – arguably as a result of Diddy’s horrible guidance and Qwanell's emotional conflicts with Willie – they are definitely more promising as a group than as solo acts.
‘Made Love Lately’ is a solid R&B record with excellent harmonies from the remaining four members. Although they clearly had some studio assistance with their notes, they crafted an impressive song.‘Made Love Lately’ was produced by Jim Beanz and is the first official release from ‘A New Day’ on Atlantic Records. Listen and download below:
The Urban market – and the industry in general – is missing an R&B group. As we wait for a girl group to rise to the forefront of the charts, Day26 would be excellent flagship figures for the rebirth of the R&B movement. Here is the first of their web-series.
XV is one of the hottest rappers in the game right now. In order to further add fuel to the hype, he drops a new visual from his Zero Heroes mixtape for "U.F.C." Dope-nessss.
Big Sean and his tour DJ Mo Beatz have teamed up with adidas for a special remix project of his debut album Finally Famous. The mixtapes boasts productions credits from the the likes of Maejor, The Olympicks, Drumma Boy and many more. Download here .
Beyonce drops another new video, this time for the single ‘Party’ taken off her album 4. A shame Andre 3000 was replaced, but J. Cole serves it nicely in any case. Arguably one of Beyonce’s best singles – this song reflects exactly what she’s best at doing. Grown R&B.
… Oh, and slightly off point – Solange looks mad hawt in this.
Mary J’s collaboration with Drake has surfaced, it’s called ‘Mr. Wrong’ and comes off her new album My Life II… The Journey Continues (Act 1). Its not ReallyOld School Mary , but contonuing her road of her past couple of alabums. Good Beat, Mary sounds great, Drake hits it - but still nothing special - just good.
Lets hope the rest of the album sounds different.
Today, enjoy a free mp3 download of DJ Eleven's remix of J-Boogie’s Dubtronic Science's song "Go To Work" featuring The Pimps of Joytime. oooooooohhh babay! DJ Eleven's remix is a dance-floor burner that will work for any club - this joint is funnkkaay.
I want to get on the dancefloor right now. If you miss those Soul Funk Vibes - Click play, and meet me on the dance floor.
The Bristol based producer has provided us with ’nuff beats over the years – his unique wizardry is melodic, but also mad gully. But releasing a full album has its pressures. Check the stream here.
Now it’s time for the lead singles video featuring Jessie Ware & Freddie Gibbs.
Jermaine Cole sends out a visual for "Lost Ones". The emotive clip follows the struggles of a young relationship that came to a crossroads because of an unexpected pregnancy. The thought provoking track is also featured on his chart topping debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, which is out now.
Here are the new visuals from Comptons’ Buddy. Being 17 years old, signed to Pharrell’s ‘I Am Other’ label is a serious serious nod of approval. The track dropped a couple of weeks back and after it being featured on the How To Make It In America, Vol.2 mixtape its finally got the video treatment. A Neptunes produced certified banger. He is currently working on his debut project.
London's Dave Taylor has literally been everywhere in the worlds of electronic music and many related genres over the course of his career that so far spans almost a decade. He's probably most well known for being half of Major Lazer with Diplo, but what he does best is actually just make proper music. This single on his own upcoming label Dubsided is what he considers to be a salvo of sorts against the manufactured pop drowning the airwaves these days, and it's the hugely imposing yet beautiful vocals of Brooklyn's R&B singer/songwriter extraordinare Andrea Martin that make this song who has written songs for Monica, En Vogue and SWV.
This relentless, isolated beat mixes well with those harmonious back vocals – not to mention Martin’s powerhouse vocals, reminiscent of the 90s.
UK producer Synkro shoots out an ambient house rendition of “Night Time” by the xx. The tune should give enough incentive to be on the lookout for this England talent.
Terius Nash formerly known as The-Dream (which I still think is a better name) releases the first visual off his free album 1977. His upcoming album The Love, IV: Diary of a Madman has been delayed due to the release of his first international project 1984: Persona of Love.
You most likely know Mr. Joe Thomas as a very sophisticated mature singer, but this track was way back when he was a youngn fresh on the scene in 1993. Smooth Ol School summer joint.
A Snapbacks and backpacks artist - one for the locals.
You Have probally heard of this young and upcoming rapper who goes by the name of "Miracle" or "Miracle the boy wonder".
No hiltop hood, but hes' also no "Fake Yank" rapper either...Miracle is just.... real.
Born in Ghana, raised in Melbourne and now residing in Sydney. Samson Andah (Miracle) is now ready to take the world by storm.
As a kid, Miracle and his friends used to watch Rap and Hip-Hop music videos and tried to imitate their favourite rappers - where he created major viral fame from his school project video for "Better dayz". Now, Miracle is creating his own vibe in the new wave of hip-hop, Last year he performed at Urban Music festival SupaFest amongst acts such as Snoop Dogg, T-Pain and Nelly. He has now created more fame recording a new mixtape "Before we Meet" released earlier this year. Now Officially re-signing to Sony Music Australia - Miracle is ready to get to work.
I've never been so excited for a Aussie MC. Contrary to common belief, Australia does have some dope MCs with great lyricism - however most of these acts don't have the commercial essence to bring them out of the underground or across the seas. The ones that do, seem to be imitating the US rappers too much with their accent, metaphors and style. However with this new wave of hip-hop blowing over to Australia, Miracle is truly a 'Miracle'. His lyrics feel unforced - laidback, relavant and just 'real'. Not rapping about getting rich, rather rapping for the heck of it.
Just check out his video for "Koolin" if you don't believe me. Just kickin' it by the pool with mates just like a regular Aussie kid. Summer Jam.
Below is his new track "Top Bloke" where he says "Australia on his back and Africa on his chest" - carrying aus hip-hop while reprenting Africa. Hopefully accross the seas - but for now, Australia should get on his back. Iller.
Not Enough to get you on the Miracle train? - well check out his youtube channel.
Beyonce is set to release her next single (Quick I know!), Kanye produced ‘Party’. Giving the nod to J. Cole for the refix instead of Andre 3000!?!!!!. I got much much love for J.cole but this one could be debatable. However either way I'm happy. With the release of the “Party” video scheduled for October 26th on BET’s 106 & Park, it seems that the video will too replace Andre 3000 with Cole as well.
Cocaine 80s, led by No I.D., come correct AGAIN with their newest song, “Six”. This soulful jam again join forces with Common and this track has some serious swagger pon the hook. Really nice keys and again some drums that roll nicely. From the new FreEP “Ghost Lady” which you can pick up here. Spring treats for your ears.
Qualified chef-turned-rapper from Queens, New York, newcomer Action Bronson has built up a loyal following since he decided to leave the kitchen for a recording studio only 18 short months ago. However, the man Rolling Stone Magazine recently called the “Artist to Watch” didn’t stray too far from the kitchen, as he is well known for rapping about his culinary delights.
Action recently linked up with Producer Statik Selektah, and a couple tracks turned into a whole project called "Well Done" to be released on November 22.
Good music for a good cause reaches us today. Talib joins forces with Big K.R.I.T., Outasight and singer Mela Machinko for "Beautiful." The M-Phazes-produced tune is available as a download via iTunes whereas all proceeds will go in support of the American Cancer Society. Hence, listen below and get down for the cause here.
Up-N-Coming Rapper, Diggy Simmons presents his next single off his upcoming debut album. Entitled "Do It Like You,". The Track is a radio friendly which features the soft voice of Jeremih. Stream and download here.
New drop from Mac Miller as he uncovers this unreleased record titled "Stop Bitchin'" produced by Big Jerm. Won't be on Blue Slide Park - but its still on schedule to drop November 8, 2011.
Here is some Friday night baby making music for you. Another leaked single “The Real Her,” featuring Weezy who adds a cheeky verse to compliment what is a rather full on and sombre vocal performance from Drizzy. Drake’s sophomore album is set to release November 15th and regardless of whether it lives up to the first I shall still be copping.
I blogged this dude as one of the first posts on Alter-Hip-Soul and have been keeping up with his monthly releases. Here, the Netherlands crooner re-imagines Lil Wayne's Single as part of his monthly Mar Variations series.
Better than the original in my humble opinion. Smoooth - Are you single for the night?
The Roots’ forthcoming album undun which features Big K.R.I.T. It is going to be a 10 track orchestral concept album.
Speaking about the album drummer ?uestlove said:
“We’ve been intentionally making our albums shorter in length so that they can be experienced as a continuous work. The music is band-oriented with an eye on the moody cinematic. As a DJ, I am the king of playlists, but I don’t want our albums to feel like a playlist or a mixtape for that matter. We want to tell stories that work within the album format and we want the stories to be nuanced and useful to people.
“undun is the story of this kid who becomes criminal, but he wasn’t born criminal. He’s not the nouveau exotic primitive bug-eyed gunrunner like Tupac’s character Bishop in Juice… he’s actually thoughtful and is neither victim nor hero. Just some kid who begins to order his world in a way that makes the most sense to him at a given moment… At the end of the day… isn’t that what we all do?”
Still one of my favourite breakthrough artists of this year, SBTRKT has literally gone from strength to strength. This new track was debuted at the end of his BBC’s Radio 1 set and during his set. Nice vocals as always by Sampha.
Here is a real laidback tune, titled "French Inhale" by Wiz and Snoop featuring Mike Posner, and they have invited Mac Miller to join the fun and light it up on another version. The song will land on the official soundtrack for Mac & Devin Go To High School soundtrack.
After hearing the below tune (Slick stop-flash animation for the visual), I was eager for more. This is Def Sound, LA’s freshest, creative rapper.
Def Sound travels around the world, reading, listening and performs some diverse genres. His lastest mixtape has vast sounds, sorry I mean ‘bitchtape'.
Def navigates through dark, gritty electronic tracks to lighter hip hop waves, to glitchy mismatched beats completed with witty wordplay. And THIS is apparently something he just knocked up…oooooH!thee.bitchtape.
