Video: Jill Scott Ft. Paul Wall – So Gone (What My Mind Says) [R&B/Soul]

Jill Scott’s The Light of the Sun album was not all that great. Scott's voice is always beautiful, but most of the tracks (including this one, felt empty). Paul Wall doesn't do much for me either.
I guess what I look for (in all artists) is artistic evolution and that’s something I unfortunately failed to see this time round.

Video: Jesse Boykins III - I Can't Stay [Alt-Soul]

After releasing his well received EP, Way of a Wayfarer - Jesse Boykins III lest loose his new visual for the Gold Panda-produced jam “I Can’t Stay”.
“The more you learn who you are as an individual, the more you are able to sense who really values your love & that’s why I couldn’t stay.”
Love everything about this.

Video: Mar Variation - Single (Lil Wayne Cover) [Alt-R&B]

I blogged this dude as one of the first posts on Alter-Hip-Soul and have been keeping up with his monthly releases. Here, the Netherlands crooner re-imagines Lil Wayne's Single as part of his monthly Mar Variations series.
Better than the original in my humble opinion. Smoooth - Are you single for the night?

New Track: Mayer Hawthorne - No Strings [Soul]

On October 4th, Soul crooner Mayer Hawthorne released his second album How Do You Do. The album features Snoop Dogg who appeared on the first official single "Can't Stop". Here is one of my favourite tracks from the album, "No Strings". Mayer's voice is just real - I can understand his sales in the past, but in this nu-vintage era, things are looking good for the crooner.
You can support him and buy his new album out now!

New Track: Marsha Ambrosius - Your Sincerely (Full Version) [Neo Soul]

New Track: Justin Timberlake - Words I Say [Soul/R&B]

It's been a minute since we've heard something from JT since his recent acting and business ventures. However today I received a little drop of goodness in my inbox - a new soulful track by Mr. Timberlake himself.
"Words I Say" reminds me of something Eric Benet or Maxwell or even Anthony Hamilton would perform. We all know JT is a great singer, but I was unaware he had this smooth, smooth soulful side to him. He has laced his vocals with a bit of honey in some parts and poured some whisky on other parts - not to mention the guitar solo at the end. Smooth all round.
I am really digging this right now. Listen and Download below:

Artist Check: John West [Soul/R&B]

Intro to another crooner. Emerging soul/R&B singer John West.

"I call it the humble hustle," says John West of his beginnings as a street performer in Los Angeles. "People don't have to stop. When you captivate them, you realize that it's not about you. It's about the song. Music is a service."

John West continues to provide that service with power and poise. Jamming out slick grooves and a seductive vocals - this guy is bouncing with R&B swagger and pop infectiousness. West rocks to the beat of his own drum, creating a style that's bound to win hearts everywhere—and break a few in the process. He's the new voice of Pop/Soul R&B…

Back in April, I heard his first single "Lovely" and was raving about it for weeks. Five months later and we have the video. I’m really feeling this song and expect it to blow up. Pusha T, comes through with two solid verses on this without mentioning cocaine and even puts on a leopard-print vest for the video. I guess ‘Ye really is rubbing off on him.

As far as John West, I think he’s dope. People are going to make the Robin Thicke comparisons, but I personally don’t see it–besides their look, that they’re both white, of course.

and his second single, Loved You.

Video: Delilah - Go [Alt-R&B]

Earlier I blogged about this songstess, Delilah. Here is the video for her first single "Go", where She pays homage to Chaka Khan’s ‘Ain’t Nobody’ without committing any crimes. She is Beautiful. Nothing is perfect, yet she defies all the rules (aww =P). Anyways, peep the video below and drop your thoughts in the comment box.

EP: Häzel – Playground (Teaser) [Alt-Hip-Soul]

This is the definition of Alt-Hip-Soul. I Just posted Häzel + Slakah the Beatchild collab EP, but Häzel’s most recent solo offering The Playground EP – it is honestly among some of the best music I’ve heard this year. This rising French Alt-Hip-Hop-Soul producer has taken me by surprise.
Drums snap like collars, electric piano chords to melt for, vocals restrained so as not to ruffle the endo puffers and should overall seriously help amplify your swag this week I’m sure.

Playground was released 16th May and is still available here. Check out the teaser below…

New EP: Häzel & Slakah the Beatchild – This [Soul/Jazz/Hip-Hop]

During their time in Paris together, Häzel & Slakah the Beatchild produced this brand new 6 track EP. Entitled This, the project features all new jams steeped in various influences – most predominately Soul & Hip Hop.
Both of these artists deliver well on their own, so it’s no wonder that together they have produced something quite stellar. It doesn't even need vocals because instrumentally, all the songs are strong enough to stand alone.

Listen & purchase This via the bandcamp player below…I know i just did. Very Smooth for your Sunday arvo.

Artist Check: Michael Kiwanuka [Soul/Folk]

In the midst of our electronic influenced age, it is a pleasure to hear some vintage soul in the air. Meet Alter-Hip-Soul's Artist of August, Michael Kiwanuka. He is UKs 23 year old answer to Aloe Blacc.

Tell Me A Tale is his first release via Communion Records and is most definitely guided by many  60/70′s soul legends. Manipulating a classic era, Michael Kiwanuka succeeds in sounding fresh and current. The Track has a nice brass presence, a rich saxophone finish and vocals that seem to go well beyond the years he has walked this earth, Kiwanuka gives something alot more than the norm.

If you dig the Raphael Saadiq or Aloe Blacc vibe, I would suggest learning this guy’s name too.

Here is his new folk track from the forthcoming EP I’m Getting Ready out September 18th. I have great hopes for Kiwanuka. Keep on the lookout.

New Track/Mixtape: Daley - Those Who wait [R&B/Soul]

Meaning to post this for a while now. After digging into Daley's mixtape, "Those who wait" last month, I was not surprised at the quality of it. Alter-Hip-Soul's artist of July/August delivered on this. With his first single, Game over being a stellar joint, he followed it by Those who wait (Download below) and Alone Together which Features honey laced vocals from Marsha Ambrosius. He finished up the mixtape with some solid acoustic covers of Like a virgin and Pretty Wings. The real deal. Hope this guys blows up.

Download the full tape here.

New Track: Goapele - Play [Neo Soul]

2 New Tracks: Robin Thicke - I'm An Animal/Mission [Soul/R&B]

Mr. Sex therapy returns with some freshness. From telling you how he likes it in the morning, he moves to some more vintage soul on "I'm an Animal". The soulful cut is an early audio taste from the singers upcoming fifth album, which is due in late 2011/early 2012. The next track Mission is a trip back to classic Thicke. Honey-laced vocals over some smooth chords. Beautiful. Check them both out below.

New Track: Sampha - Indecision [Alt-Soul]

With the huge association to SBTRKT, Sampha’s popularity has grown immensely. After listening to his EP over a year ago, knew this chap would get big. The differing dynamics he uses with his vocals is amazing. He dropped this new track less than 24 hours ago and I have played it at least 5 times in the last 30 minutes.

His husky, yet sweet tone sits with me as the piano led balled takes a back seat. New project on the way? I hope. Until then I’m going to play this back a few more times.

Big Propz to PBB.

Video: Fatima - Mind [Neo Soul]

Official video to ‘Mind’ taking from the Follow You EP. Nothing but “straight buttah” oozing through this one.
